Privacy Policy
Your data stays on your Mac and goes only to your own Nightscout.
Summary
- Your glucose data stays on your Mac. GluScout sends it only to the Nightscout servers you add.
- No account, no tracking, no analytics, no advertising, no cloud service and no AI service.
- Access tokens are stored in the macOS Keychain.
- You can delete your data in GluScout at any time.
Introduction
GluScout is a macOS menu bar app that shows glucose readings from your own Nightscout server. It is made for people with diabetes and for the people who look after them. GluScout supplies no glucose data of its own. This Privacy Policy explains what the app stores, where it stores it and where it sends it.
GluScout is for information only. It is not a medical device and gives no medical advice. Always verify readings with your approved devices. Not for emergencies. Discuss any changes with your care team.
Information GluScout Handles
Data You Enter
Each person you watch has a Profile, and each Profile connects to one Nightscout server. You can add several Profiles. For each Profile, GluScout stores:
- Profile details: a name you choose, the address of the Nightscout server, a colour, and your glucose targets
- Access token: optional, only needed if your Nightscout site is protected
- Alert and menu bar settings: which alerts are on and how the Profile appears in the menu bar
- App settings: for example the glucose unit and the appearance
Profile names are free text. Use whatever name you like; GluScout does not ask for real names, ages or any other personal details.
Data Read from Your Nightscout Server
- Glucose readings: values, timestamps and trend directions
- Device name: the name of the sensor or device, as stored in Nightscout
- Time zone: the time zone from the Nightscout server, used to place readings at the right time of day
The Analytics Cache
The Analytics window needs more history than the live view. For each Profile, GluScout keeps a copy of up to one year of readings (time, value and time zone offset) in a database file on your Mac.
- It stays on your Mac: the copy never leaves your Mac. All Analytics calculations run on your Mac.
- It is limited to a year: readings older than one year are removed automatically.
- It is protected: the file sits inside the app's sandbox container, can be read only by your macOS user account, and is excluded from backups.
- You can delete it: in Settings, open Analytics data and choose Clear analytics data. Your Profiles, settings and the data in Nightscout stay as they are. The history is downloaded again the next time you open a Profile in Analytics.
- Deleting a Profile deletes its copy: removing a Profile also removes its cached readings.
Where Your Data Goes
Only to Your Own Nightscout
- Your servers only: GluScout contacts only the Nightscout servers you add as Profiles, one per Profile.
- Connection: if you leave out the address scheme, GluScout adds https://. Plain http addresses are not accepted, except for a server on your own Mac (localhost).
- Redirects: GluScout refuses redirects that would send your access token to a different host.
- Operated by someone else: your Nightscout server is run by you or by whoever hosts it for you. Its data practices are outside GluScout.
No Third Parties
- No analytics, tracking or crash-reporting services
- No advertising networks
- No cloud storage or sync of your glucose data
- No AI or language-model services
- No third-party code inside the app: GluScout uses only Apple's own frameworks
- No data sales, and no sharing with data brokers or researchers
GluScout does not need an account. The developer receives none of your data.
How Your Data Is Stored and Protected
- Keychain: access tokens are stored in the macOS Keychain, one per Profile, and are readable only while your Mac is unlocked.
- App Sandbox: GluScout runs in Apple's app sandbox. Its only network permission is to connect out to servers, which it uses for your Nightscout.
- Local storage: Profiles and settings are stored on your Mac in the app's container.
Alerts and Notifications
GluScout can alert you about low, high, urgent low, urgent high and stale data, separately for each Profile. Alerts are off until you turn them on.
- Local only: alerts are macOS notifications created on your Mac from the readings it already holds. No server sends them.
- Your permission: macOS asks you to allow notifications. You can change this at any time in System Settings.
- Content: a notification shows who the reading is for, the value with its unit, the trend and the age of the reading.
- A convenience: alerts are not a safety system. Keep using the alarms of your approved CGM, receiver or pump.
How GluScout Uses Your Data
GluScout uses your data to show the latest reading, trend and age in the menu bar and popover, to draw the 4-hour chart, to calculate the Analytics window and to send alerts. Observations in Analytics describe patterns in your data together with the number of readings and days behind them. They are not advice.
GluScout does not use your data for analytics about you, marketing, advertising, profiling or sale.
Your Control
- Delete a Profile: this removes its access token from the Keychain, its alert and menu bar settings and its cached readings.
- Clear analytics data: removes the cached readings of every Profile and keeps your Profiles and settings.
- Before you uninstall: delete your Profiles in GluScout first. macOS does not always remove an app's data when you move the app to the Trash.
- No account: there is nothing to register and nothing to close.
- Your Nightscout: you control your Nightscout server and its data independently of GluScout.
This Website
- The website has no analytics, no cookies, no advertising and no third-party scripts or fonts.
- It remembers your light or dark theme choice in your browser's local storage on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- It has no form. If you write to the email address below, we receive your email address and your message and use them only to answer you.
Children's Privacy
Parents and guardians may use GluScout to watch a child's glucose. In that case:
- Adults stay in control: the parent or guardian sets up and controls the Profiles, settings and data.
- Same protections: everything in this policy applies equally to a child's data.
- No age collection: GluScout does not ask for or store anyone's age, and it has no accounts.
Legal Requests
We may disclose information only if the law requires it. Because your data stays on your Mac and your Nightscout server, we hold none of it.
Changes to This Policy
If GluScout's handling of data changes, we will update this page and its date.
